Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. Structural scoliosis is congenital and is usually more severe than functional scoliosis. Functional scoliosis is due to an imbalance of the functioning of muscles associated with the back. It may be a result of lifestyle, such as repetitive movements or injury. Both types of scoliosis can benefit from specific yoga poses. Yoga for scoliosis and back care can reduce pain and help lessen incorrect curvatures of the spine.
Living with a wired sternum plate since 1964, I have experienced first-hand the benefits of using yoga therapeutically. In my practice, like a practice for scoliosis and backcare, I have learned how to lengthen my spine, realign my posture, strengthen my back and core muscles, reduce my pain as well as bring about deep breath awareness. This has been deeply and positively transformative for body, breath and mind.
