Conscious Grieving®: A Compassionate Approach to Loss

Love and death are the great gifts that are given to us; mostly they are passed on unopened.

—Rainer Maria Rilke

If you’re navigating the loss of someone you love, please know you don’t have to do it alone.

Grief is one of life’s most profound challenges, a deeply personal journey that can feel overwhelming, endless, and impossible to bear. Many of us would do anything to avoid this pain. Yet with the right support, grief can also become a doorway to unexpected growth and transformation.

Koren Paalman created Conscious Grieving® in 2007 following the death of her life partner. At the time, no one was integrating yoga with grief support. The sadness felt unbearable and the path forward seemed impossible to find. Traditional grief counseling helped, but she needed something more, something that recognized that grief lives in the body as much as in the heart and mind.

When she finally found emotional support and learned somatic skills to help her process the loss, something shifted. The grief didn’t disappear, but it began to open rather than destroy. It changed the direction of her life in ways she couldn’t have imagined.

That experience became the foundation for Conscious Grieving®, a registered trademark and methodology born from lived experience and refined through years of helping herself and others navigate loss. Since then, she’s experienced many deaths of people close to her. Each loss has deepened her understanding that while grief is universal, each person’s journey through it is unique. She brings this hard-won wisdom, along with her 30+ years of yoga expertise as a Senior Iyengar teacher and certified yoga therapist, to this deeply personal work.

Conscious Grieving® combines yoga with complementary healing practices to support you through this tender time. Whether you’re grieving yourself or supporting someone who is, this work offers a gentle, embodied approach to moving through loss. The practice recognizes that grief affects the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, and provides tools for all three. You don’t have to carry this alone. Koren is here to help.

Through Conscious Grieving®, Koren offers individual grief support sessions, group sessions and workshops, each designed to meet you exactly where you are in your grief journey. You’ll find a safe, confidential space to honor your loved one while learning practices that help you carry your loss with more ease.

Together we explore grief-specific yoga sequences, breathwork that calms the overwhelmed nervous system, letting-go rituals, creative expression, and coping skills that actually work. This isn’t about “getting over” your loss, it’s about learning to live alongside it with greater awareness and compassion for yourself.

Conscious Grieving® is dedicated to the memory of Jack Ibarra, 1973-2007.

Testimonials

“I wasn’t sure what to expect when I attended one of Koren’s Conscious Grieving® workshops, but felt really fortunate to be able to be there. It was so helpful! I was really impressed with Koren’s ability to lead, facilitate, teach, be present. Her gentleness and understanding are amazing. I was surprised by an almost immediate sense of community and support, which is not something I’d experienced prior.
”
-Rachel Kaplan, Social Science Researcher
“My reasons for attending Koren’s Conscious Grieving® workshop were twofold. In my professional life I deal with loss every day as a hospice social worker. In my personal life I have had my share of loss, the most recent being the death of my partner. Koren addresses loss from many angles and incorporates yoga poses as a healing practice. Her presence alone is a thoughtful and healing one and her dedication to sharing her knowledge shines through. I recommend this workshop as a social worker, a yogi and a person who has grown from the losses I have experienced.”
-Leslie Stampler, MSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker
“I realized how beneficial Iyengar yoga is for the grieving process. I lost both my parents last year in quick succession and was devastated. I didn’t want to get out of bed or do anything physical. I attended Koren’s Conscious Grieving® workshop which incorporated yoga with strategies for coping with grief and had an amazing experience. It provided a turning point for me, I realized I was not alone in my grief. I was given tools to process and communicate, as well as experiencing a lot of healing energy and great advice. I strongly recommend attending a Conscious Grieving® workshop to anyone experiencing a loss.”
-Leslie Pollack, Chef/CEO Sublime Cuisine
“I wanted to take the time to thank you again for the Conscious Grieving® workshop. It definitely helped. Isn’t it funny how sharing your emotions with total strangers can be cleansing to the soul? And Koren you were wonderful.
”
-Eric Lamonte Tew, NYC Human Resources Administration Accountant”Even after dealing with my grief for many years, I found this workshop to be very freeing. It was so wonderful to find myself in such an open and supportive environment. Thank you Koren for your work.”-Galen Fairbanks, Events Coordinator
